OAPI: IP Directorate to be split into two departments

We understand that OAPI’s Directorate of Intellectual Property is to be split into two separate directorates - one for trade marks and another for patents. This follows a resolution adopted at an OAPI board meeting during December 2017. Official notification is expected shortly. We will provide a further update in due course.

This development follows Nigeria’s recent decision to split its Registry of Trade Marks, Patents and Designs into three separate registries. These two developments can be seen as a growing recognition in Africa of both the importance and complexity of intellectual property.
