Stellenbosch University Founds Chair of Intellectual Property

The University of Stellenbosch has created a Chair of Intellectual Property, named after Anton Mostert, a prominent advocate and legal personality in South Africa. The chair is sponsored by Richemont International and other companies within the group.

Intellectual property expert Owen Dean, a former Senior Partner, and now a Consultant, at Spoor & Fisher will take up the position of the Chair in July. “Judge Anton Mostert was a principled and courageous judge who fought fiercely for the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law in South Africa,” says Dean. It is a great honour to be named to take up this chair.”

Dean says the chair was established to create a centre of excellence in IP at the university, both nationally and internationally. “The chair will become a custodian of IP in South Africa and exert an influence on the development and well-being of IP law.

To mark the inauguration of the Chair, the university is organising an international conference on IP which will be held on 1 and 2 September 2011. Themed “New Horizons for Intellectual Property Law”, the conference will deal with topics such as the conflict between IP rights and human rights, the status of South African IP law and practice, “Take Down Notices” in respect of the internet, and other significant national and international issues.

The line-up of speakers includes Dr Rob Davies, the Minister of Trade and Industries; Judge Louis Harms, the Deputy President of the South African Supreme Court of Appeal; António Campinos, president of the Office of Harmonization for the Internal Market (OHIM); and a selection of some of the most prominent individuals in the international IP field, including Dan Bereskin (Canada), Peter Siemsen (Brazil), Charles Gielen (The Netherlands), Helen Newman (UK) and Frederick Mostert (UK).
