Trade marks in Africa: your questions answered

Trade mark activity is growing rapidly in Africa, both as regards protection and enforcement. Yet there is still a great deal of uncertainty.

In which countries should companies be protecting their trade marks across Africa? Just what is OAPI, and what is ARIPO? Do these registration systems work? Which countries have joined up to the Madrid Protocol? Why are there doubts about the validity and enforceability of International Registrations in certain African countries? Given the flurry of new IP laws in Africa, what do the national registration systems offer?
